Themajor US equity indices closed lower Monday despite Europe’s strategy to curb its debt. MF Global (NYSE:MF) filed for bankruptcy protection in a New York court, listing $100 million-$500 million in assets and JP Morgan (NYSE:JPM) and Deutsche Bank (NYSE:DB) as among its largest unsecured creditors. The filing for bankruptcy also came with a suspension from doing business with the New York Federal Reserve. MF Global has held talks with five potential buyers for all parts of the company including banks, private-equity firms and brokers
The major US equity indices closed sharply higher Thursday thanks to evidence that the US economy is not sliding into recession and following news on Europe. The Commerce Department reported that the US economy grew 2.5% in Q3. The Labor Department reported that first-time jobless claims fell by 2000 to 402000 last week. European leaders announced a deal in which private investors in Greek government will take a 50% writedown on the value of their holdings. The agreement is expected to be finalized by the start of 2012
