Themajor US equity indices closed lower Monday following a report this morning from the Commerce Department showing that personal income increased at a lower-than-expected rate. Personal income in July rose 0.2%, below economists’ predictions of a 0.3% growth rate. Last month’s personal spending rose 0.4%, its biggest increase in four months, below economists’ expectations of a 0.3% hike.
Themajor US equity indices closed higher Tuesday following successful debt auctions in Europe and as technology stocks were boosted on news that the personal computer market is expected to grow. International Data Corporation said that it expects the personal computer market will grow 20% this year. New York state manufacturing continued to grow in June, as the Empire State index rose to 19.6, up from 19.1 in May.
